Alive in Christ
President Dallin H. Oaks
April 2026 General Conference · Sunday Morning Session
Talk Overview
The central themes President Oaks invites us to consider.
Resurrection
A literal, universal resurrection means our mortal struggles are temporary.
Christlike Love
We're called to love all people, including those who show little love in return.
Peacemaking
Forgo harsh words. Become peacemakers in every conversation and interaction.
A Child of God
I witnessed this uncommon loving of an adversary at a stake conference many years ago. As I looked over the audience before the meeting began, I had an unusual impression to call on a particular woman in a yellow dress. I asked the stake president if he believed this woman would give a suitable talk if called on. He said he thought so. At my request, he later called her out of the audience to give a short talk.
As she came forward, I was apprehensive about what she might say. She introduced herself as a nurse employed to watch over patients in a maximum care facility. Her patients included one she described as "the most repulsive man" she had ever met. From his bedridden position, he did everything he could do to make life miserable for the nurses who were caring for him, including foul language, spitting on the floor, and constantly insulting them in other repulsive ways. She despised him.
One evening she heard a loud crash from this man's room. Responding, she ran to his room and was shocked to find him fallen out of bed and thrashing about in a pool of broken glass, liquid, and blood. In that moment, a profound change came over her. She felt an almost electric current of love from our Heavenly Father to this man. She saw him as a child of God.
As she knelt and held him in her arms and tried to give him comfort, he said, "I want to go home. I just want to go home." In a short time, he was dead. She testified that being brought to see a despised enemy like this as a child of God was one of the great spiritual experiences of her life.
Have you ever had your heart changed toward someone you struggled with? What opened the door?
How Christ Loved His Enemies
Jesus and the Woman Taken in Adultery (churchofjesuschrist.org)
The Woman Taken in Adultery
The Pharisees dragged this woman before Christ as a trap. The Law of Moses said adultery meant death, but Rome didn't let Jews carry out executions. If Jesus said to stone her, he'd be breaking Roman law. If he said to let her go, he'd be contradicting Moses. Either way, they win.
Jesus didn't respond at first. Then: "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." One by one, they walked away. He looked at her and said: "Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more."
What Jesus said was less about being an accusation that the Pharisees were also sinners, but more an invitation to relate to her and even feel compassion for her. Reminding them that they were also sinners put her accusers in her shoes. Once they saw themselves in the person being judged, nobody could throw the stone.
What helps you feel love for someone you're tempted to judge? When was a time you loved someone instead of judging them?
Love and Boundaries
Real scenarios where both are required.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.Matthew 5:9
Peacemakers! How it would change the world if followers of Christ would forgo harsh and hurtful words in all their communications.President Dallin H. Oaks
A parent or in-law is controlling or critical.
You want to honor the relationship, but you also need to protect your own household.
A friend or family member has strong political views and says something that cuts.
Maybe they mock people who voted a certain way, or say something that goes against your values. How should you respond?
A coworker or neighbor is difficult.
How do you enforce boundaries without creating an enemy?
Pick one of these scenarios. How do you love the person while maintaining boundaries?
